Most screens cannot be cleaned as they have special coatings on them. But
equipment can and should be cleaned regularly. I use regular soft clothes to
dust all equipment. I use glass cleaner sprayed on a paper towel to clean
glass surfaces - Do NOT use anything other than plain water on the fresnel
lense of an overhead. If needed, use a damp cloth with mild detergent to
clean the outside of equipment - rinse and dry well. I use canned air to
blow out all equipment boxes, computers, etc. I use a cotton swab dipped in
alcohol to clean tape heads. I send out my VCRs to be cleaned and checked.

I do this every spring and then cover all with large plastic bags. This way
they are clean when I need to check them out to teachers. This is all part
of maintaining my equipment. You can train volunteers or older students to
help with this if you have a lot. This also helps me to keep a handle on
the need for newer equipment. Oh, one other thing I do is to place an extra
bulb in its package) inside overheads - that way if a bulb blows during a
presentation, the teacher doesn't have to wait until a student comes back
with a new one.

Subject: TAR: a/v cleaners

Hello,

Just a quick, possibly idiotic, question- what do you use to clean a/v
screens, tape players, etc? I see fancy things in catalogs ($$$), yet I was
told that things such as Swiffers work just fine. Things get so dusty- and I
am tempted to use them! Cheap at Costco!

I am an elem librarian (year 2) who has the a/v as well (plus my
computers) - and things that come back for summer storage were so dusty -
heck, they were dusty when I handed them out too last September-
not my job to clean, per se- previous librarian had the impression that dust
was a good thing.... that's what the aides said when I asked them to dust
bookshelves as needed.

Ergh!

Suggestions?

TIA,
Kim
