Linda Bettinger as me to post the information on the upcoming all day =
media literacy workshop at AASL in Oct. =20

WARNING!

=20

=20

Are your students watching too much TV?

Are they conned by toy commercials?

Are they watching hours of violent cartoons?

Do they crave fast foods pushed by the media?

Is their body image affected by the "ideal" modeled on TV?

Do they insist on having the "right" kinds of clothes?

=20

=20

=20

Are you tired of all the negative messages and hype that is pushed on =
your students but you don't know what to do about it?

=20

HELP IS ON THE WAY!!!

=20

You can learn how to get students to think about what they are watching =
at the AASL National Conference in a full-day pre-conference session =
entitled Empower Your Students with Media Literacy Skills.

=20

In this workshop you will learn how to teach students:

* tricks media uses to get their attention

* to analyze ads for hidden messages

* to analyze video clips for four types of media violence=20

* about the four effects of watching a lot of violence =20

* techniques used to make bodies look thinner and more attractive

than they are in real life

* to question whatever they watch by asking specific questions

* to become critical viewers who make educated choices about their

          media consumption

=20

Media literacy is a curriculum whose time has come. More and more =
school districts are adopting media literacy programs so that our =
students do not fall victim to the sophisticated techniques of their =
media-inundated world. And what better place to teach these critical =
thinking skills than in the Library Media Center? Get on the cutting =
edge! Empower your students to make wise media choices and enrich their =
lives.

=20

This session is geared toward elementary age students but the concepts =
apply to all grade levels and the activities can be adapted easily for =
any age group.

=20

Guaranteed to be a fun and action-packed session!

=20

Please feel free to call or e-mail with questions about the session.
