I am a first year librarian and have instituted a pass rule at my school. Previously students were not required to have a pass and it is taking a little while for the teachers to chatch on. I have students sent without a pass (they are promptly sent back for one) and I have teachers who try to send more than three students at a time by signing multiple passes. The extra students are sent back. I am in a K-12 school serving over 1,000 students and felt that the pass system was the only way I could maintain order in the library. My pass is very simple. It has a place for up to three names, a place to check why the student is coming to the library (book check, research - computer or print, other with a blank). I feel that the passes are important because as a sub I had a student hang out in the library after I had sent him to the office. If that librarian had some sort of pass system, she would have known that the student was not supposed to be in there. I think you will be pleased with using passes. Just explain to the teachers why you feel it is important, what you expect on the pass (or design one yourself), and send students back who do not have one. The students will soon catch on that if they don't have a pass they will have to go back and get one. They will begin to remind the teacher that they need to write one.
