Hello all - thanks to everyone who had lesson plan suggestions - It's been a
great help - I was getting confused between "lesson plans" and activities.
Now, for another challenge: When I was in elementary school, my sister
worked at the public library and often scarfed up books for me when they
were discarded. One of my favorites was "Kathy" about a
junior-high-school-aged girl (maybe 14-15) who had an "early maturing"
friend named Mary (I think). Mary was from a very religious, strict family
(Kathy was not). Bottom line, Mary got pregnant, had an illegal abortion and
died from the infection; Kathy was drawn closer to her mother & younger
sister as a result. It had to have been published before 1973. Anyway,
someone borrowed my copy years ago, and I'd love to get my hands on it. It
should be appropriate for current middle school kids as well. Any ideas
about who the author might be (so I can search Out of Print books)? I
remember it being very thoughtful as well as a tear-jerker.
