Subject: HIT: books and food

Hello,

I received several suggestions of food kinds of lessons. Sadly, =
one=3D20
librarian reported that only store-bought food is allowed in their
classroom=3D s.  There=3D20 were several duplications, but here is a =
list.

Here is a hit:

Flavor of the week for middle school readers
      about an overweight boy, includes some recipes

The Honey Makers; The Pumpkin Book, both by Gail Gibbons
The Life and Times of the Honeybee, by Charles Micucci=3D20
The Life and Times of the Apple, by Charles Micucci
The Life and Times of the Peanut, by Charles Micucci=3D20
Lunch - Denise Fleming
The Popcorn Book - Tomie de Paola
Any of the books by=3DA0Saxton Freyman=3DA0& Joost Elffers (How Are You
Peeling?=3D ; Dog=3D20 Food; Baby Food; One Lonely Seahorse; Gus and =
Button...)
Homer Price - Robert McCloskey [donuts] The Chocolate Touch - Patrick =
Skene
Catling

The Cranberry books by Devlin (I used the Cranberry Thanksgiving and =
make
th=3D e=3D20 bread, it is a hit)

Biography Hash (I called it =3D3D
stew).=3DA0 I read about it in Library Talk - September/October 2000 on
page=3D20=3D =3D3D 14.=3DA0 I did a little looking around and I found it =
online.=3DA0
Go to =3D3D http://www.linworth.com/librarytalk_article.html and select =
=3D3D
"Investigating Biographies"

I buy alphabet cookies in Trader Joe's and read an alphabet book to the
K's.=3D =3DA0=3D20 Then each child has to close=3DA0his/her eyes and =
pick a
cookie.=3DA0 They can e=3D at=3D20 the cookie after they have told me a =
word that
starts with that letter.

Book Cooks has literature based classroom cooking. k-3 version by =
Janet=3D20
Bruno and 4-6 grade version is by Marlene Beierle.

 Top Secret and liver, and also avocadoes (can plant the seed, too.

Australia books (Mem Fox books) and vegemite.

I love Thunder Cake.=3DA0 The recipe is at the end of the story.

original Boxcar Children story =3DA0 The day I read the last chapter, we
make=3D20 cherry dumplings right there in the library (just like the =
Boxcar
Children e=3D at in=3D20 the book). I just dump 1 1/2 cans of cherry pie =
filling
and 1/2 cup of water into an electric fry pan. Once it is bubbling, top =
it
with dumplings made from Bisquick (recipe on box), cover and steam for =
15
minutes or so.=3DA0=3D20

My Side of the Mountain, Since the character Sam uses birch syrup =
and=3D20
sassafras tea, we try things like birch beer and talk about how =
sassafras
is=3D  now a=3D20 carcinogen (YUCK).

I also serve Matzo with a passover story since virtually none of our
students are Jewish.=3DA0=3D20

Granny Torrelli Makes Soup_by Sharon Creech. The book is made of two
parts.=3D20 In the first part, Granny makes soup (you could, too) In the
second part,=3D20 Granny makes pasta (you could, too). This is a chapter =
book
on a 4.2-4.5 rea=3D ding=3D20 level.

Stone Soup - Use Chicken Broth, frozen vegetables.

Bread and Jam for Francis - I serve jam on saltine crackers.

Pancakes Pancakes by Eric Carle.=3DA0 I use an instant pancake mix.=3DA0 =
Just
ad=3D d=3D20 water.

The Popcorn Book by Tomi dePaola.=3DA0 I used to make popcorn in a hot =
air=3D20=3D
=3D3D popper.=3DA0 Now I make it in a pot with oil at the bottom and a =
cover on
=3D3D top.=3DA0 I do it this way because we have a discussion about the =
sound
the=3D20=3D =3D3D popcorn makes when it hits the inside of the pop.=3DA0 =
It also has
a great=3D20=3D =3D3D smell!

Make microwave pretzels to use with Walter the Baker by Carle

My original ideas were Cranberry Thanksgiving, cranberry bread from
book's=3D20 recipe.

Night Tree by Bunting, and make birdfeeders by putting p-nut butter on
pine=3D20 cones

Kiss the Cow and make milk by shaking heavy cream.

I think this year I will read Latkes, Latkes and make some latkes with
sour=3D20 cream and applesauce.

Happy reading and eating, too (in the library?)
