My question on shelving concerned the type of shelving where there isn't=

really a bottom shelf.
The kind where the shelf stands on legs and the "bottom" shelf is up off
the floor and the area under the shelf is open.

Several people have this kind of shelving and their responses are below. =
I
am especially interested in the first type. Does anyone have any ideas as=

to what vendor would sell this type of shelving? I know that shelving spa=
ce
is a problem but I am also thinking that shelving needs for a high school=

are changing. I know that my book purchases have greatly changed with the=

use of online databases and electronic medium. I am thinking that I don't=

need the quantity of print materials I have had in the past and feel that=

my shelving units should reflect this change.

response

I have interesting shelving in the lmc and it is on wheels. The bookcases=

seem to fit into a strong/heavy frame which is on wheels. There is space
between the floor and the bottom of the shelving. These cases are large,
holding books on 2 sides but they can be moved out of the way for book
fair, meetings and other events which are sometimes in the lmc. We are ve=
ry
lucky to have them. The others schools which have been renovated did not
get this kind of shelving. There are no drawbacks that I can think of. I
hope you are able to find what you want. I have no idea where these came
from.

I spend more time pulling things out from under shelves, tables, couches,=

etc.! I got some new shelving like that last year.
Fortunately the bottom shelves were adjustable and I now I have them
adjusted to the floor, just like the old shelves I couldn't wait to chang=
e.
I do have rules about food and newspapers and cleaning up after yourself=
,
but you have high school kids too and I'm sure you know how that goes!

Because my shelving space is tight. The first question that popped into =
my
head is why waste the space? Next, what kind of legs? Are you against t=
he
wall or free standing? How stable would that configuration be once loade=
d
with books?

Almost all shelving available in australia is like this. Its easy to clea=
n,
better on your back, and it gives storage for boxes underneath if you wis=
h.
The downside is that you get 1 less row of shelving.

I just don't put books on the bottom shelf. Too much creaking and groanin=
g
:)

Yes, I have shelving like that (old!!!) and now that my shelves are getti=
ng
so full, I sometimes put some of the series books on the floor under ther=
e
(Hardy Boys, Willard Price, Brian Jacques) The kids still find them and i=
t
lets me eke just a little more shelf space....
