Colleagues, I figure this is the group most likely to have experience in the following area. My 6-year-old PowerMAC 6500 has seen better days, and besides, I want high speed internet access at home. I have decided to replace it with a PC although not without regret and some degree of self-doubt. My main concern other than that I will finally have to learn Windows and remember to right-click is the transfer of data. In particular I have 10 years of Quicken data for myself and My Mom and Dad. It would be horrendous to have to re-enter all of that information. I have been to the Quicken website and tried to follow their directions to get my files ready to convert but the information on the sitefor my Quicken 98 MAC is forconversion to Quicken for Windows 97 not the 2003 version. I would guess I will be lucky if I get by with minor editing when I am done. Many of the other files I want to convert are Word, Powerpoint, or Excel 98. I'm hoping but not confident that will be fairly easy. I know they are compatible with Office 97 but I will be buying the newest version of Office. Then I have a number of Clarisworks databases and lots of Simpletext documents. One of my sons borrowed a CD burner and saved my documents folders on a couple of Cd's. However I don't think I will be able to open most of them on the PC as is unless there is some kind of software program I can get that works like MAClinks+ does on the MAC. Is there? I would appreciate any advice you can give me if you have been through this in terms of the most painless way to get this done. I am much more familiar with moving PC documents to the MAC than I am the other way around. I am not sure my new PC will even have a floppy drive and even if it does, surely there must be something faster than opening one file at a time on the MAC, saving it in a PC-readable format on a disk, and then opening it on the PC and saving it in the format I want. We are talking about a lot of files here. I am still deciding between a Dell and a Gateway. The advantage for Dell is their consistently high ratings and the ability to customize the system you get. One disadvantage is that I read the high end Dells no longer have a floppy drive (Back to the data conversion thing again.) The other is no local tech support. The advantage for Gateway is that they offer some perks to senior citizens like me have a local store where I can supposedly get training, help, etc. The disadvantage is that I hear Gateways are much more likely to be lemons and that you don't get much help from the company when that is the case. Please share your experience with these two companies Thanks for any practical advice you may be able to share.
