Colleagues,

If you read my last message you know I am in the process of buying a new
computer. The main reason I am doing so is for high speed internet access
and because I want to do a multimedia family Newsletter for our far-flung
children-Photo-albums, maybe some sound slide shows. etc__Whatever the
technology makes possible that I can master to help keep us all in touch.

I am seeking the benefit of your experience as to which type of internet
access I will want for my new PC.

Everyone I know here in the KC area has Cable Modem, either Road Runner from
Time Warner or Comcast. However DSL from SBC is also available. The cost
seems to be comparable.

Which is best--most stable and likely to work reliably without a lot of
tweaking. The cable company claims that DSL doesn't work well if you are
not within a mile of the Telephone company. I have heard that Cable, like
my dial-up, slows down when traffic is heavy.

I am leaning toward Road Runner especially since I don't know of anyone in
Kansas City to ask about DSL.

If I go that way, I can either get straight Road Runner or I can Use it with
Earthlink, my current dialup provider. Again the cost in about the same. Is
there a reason not to keep Earthlink? That way I wouldn't have to change my
email address and all my online accounts would stay intact. Or would having
Earthlink through Time-Warner slow things down and get in the way like AOL
always did with dialup internet.

Also what else do I need for high-speed internet access. What about a
firewall? As a long-time MAC user, I never worried much about viruses, but
I know PC users are more susceptible. Do you need both a firewall and a
virus program? Earthlink offers a software firewall for free and a "real"
or hardware one for about $75. What do you think?

If a buy a Dell, they offer a security package through McAffee, but one of
my son says I should get Norton. What do you think?

Also What other utilities do I need for a new computer? I use Retrospect
Express to backup my MAC. What do PC users do?

Thanks in Advance
Paula Neale
