Michelle, I tried responding to you directly, but my email was stopped by "spamcops". So here it is for all to read: =46or collection development: =46irst, assess what is there in the collection. Where are the holes? Has weeding decimated any particular area? What is going to be weeded soon and will need replacement titles? What are the students asking for that we don't have? Second: I use Booklist, School Library Journal, and Library Media Connection (formerly Book Report and Library Talk) for reviews. I continuously add titles to my Follett Titlewave (a free on-line catalog) order online until an order has accumulated to the desired amount. Occasionally I will go to Amazon or the publishers site to see if a title is available, but usually only when Follett doesn't carry a particular title. Third: If a serious hole has appeared in the collection, or if the curriculum changes or a new course is added, I do collection development searches on Titlewave and I hit the pile of catalogs. =20 I will sometimes take a book salesperson's recommendation, but only from the people I have worked with for years and whom I trust, usually for reference sets. And I have no problem telling them NO. I find myself getting VERY picking about the quality of the cataloging that comes with the books. I find myself ordering quite a bit from Follett because the cataloging is better than average. I HATE the cataloging from UPLS and many of the small publishers east of the Mississippi use them as an outsource catalog/processing source. Nothing but problems. Being a solo librarian in my school, I don't have time to recatalog all the books I receive. In my district, each school (all 254 of them) is responsible for their own orders. =20 The bad part is that my district's funding is so minimal that it is impossible to keep the collection up to date, so we also look for sales, donations, etc., but it's never enough Lee D.
