Hello all!
In July 2002 I sent the following mail:

In November 2002 our school (K-6) is adding on a new library/media center,
and as part of the GRAND OPENING, I'd like to send a bear travelling to other
schools to announce how excited we are about our great new center and find
out about your school and/or library!!
What I'm looking for are schools/librarians who would be willing to have the
bear come to your school, and you or your students can write in his journal
and send us a postcard/picture of your library (or library mascot) or email,
and then forward him to the next school on the list.
The bear (who MIGHT resemble Paddington a little bit because he is the
travelling bear) will be a paper cutout so he will fit in a big manila
envelope, and he would be sent only to people who show an interest through
this request. For safety/security we DO NOT want any pictures or names of
students at your school. I am looking at this as a way to bring the world a
little closer to our students while we celebrate the opening of our new
library/media center! I hope your students will enjoy learning about what we
do here at the library in Enfield, CT. I am planning on using this as a
springboard for all kinds of library lessons-nonfiction research of animals
and places, picture books of animals with human characteristics, and
searching the automated card catalog for all kinds of related topics!

If you would like to participate, please send me your name, and the school
name and address. Thanks for your help!!

Unfortunately, there have been MANY delays, but the library is finally
supposed to be ready in February, so the bears are packing and getting ready
for travel. I had such a HUGE response (THANKS everyone!) that each classroom
will actually get to send out their own bear to several schools, and make it
that much more exciting to map where they've been. I am still in need of
schools in the following states who might be interested:
Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine,
Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North and South Dakota,
Rhode Island, West Virginia, Utah, Vermont and Wyoming. If you are an
elementary librarian in one of these states and would like to participate, we
would appreciate it.

Thanks. The kids are really excited about this project and can't wait to
start sending out those bears!!
