Another good site for learning about braille is The Braille Bug, on the =
American Foundation's website http://www.afb.org/braillebug/

And, for those of you in California, the California School for the Blind =
is presenting a traveling exhibit from the Marie and Eugene Callahan =
Museum, part of the American Printing House for the Blind, from Jan 13, =
2003 to Feb. 13, 2003. The exhibition describes the evolution of tactile =
writing for blind people from the frist experiments in the 18th century =
to the development of braille and the invention of the Braille writer. =
The exhibit has original artifacts, reproductions, graphics, tactile =
exhibits and hands-on activities. It is open to schools, parents, =
agencies, and the general public, but you need to make an appointment.

If you would like more info, see =

January is also "Braille Literacy Month"-- January 4th was Louis =
Braille's
birthday. As a former librarian for blind and visually impaired =
students,
we celebrated this month by reading books in braille, practicing writing =
and
testing in braille, and showing others the importance of braille in =
areas
that many who are sighted take for granted--- restaurant menus, signs =
on
doors or classrooms, signs posted on bulletin boards, greeting cards, =
the
latest novels, monthly magazines, hand-outs in classrooms or assemblies,
etc.

For a special "twist" on something different, I would encourage any who =
are
interested in doing something fun to check out Hot Braille
(http://www.hotbraille.com ) to learn more about writing and reading in
braille. For more information on Louis Braille, you can do a simple =
Google
search to find tons of stuff about him, his life, and the controversy
concerning the braille code... (did you know that the blind were once
FORBIDDEN to write in braille because their teachers could not read it? =
Did
you also know that other "braille" codes were invented around the same =
time
that Louis Braille invented the code used today, but never adopted by =
the
blind community? See these websites:
http://www.brailleauthority.org/history.html
http://www.nyise.org/blind/

Have fun!
