TARGET: Obituary site?

Is there a free site that can used to find out if authors and illustrators
have died?  My students recently asked me if Verna Aardema was living.  I
did find a reference to her death in 2000.
I believe the print series Something About the Author would give me the
information, but I don't have immediate access to that.
