The book, Introduction to Reference Work, Basic Information Services, = Vol.1 by William Katz, discusses some children's sets. Here are the = author's comments: 1. The New Book of Knowledge (Danbury, CT: Grolier Inc., 21 vols.): = "edited for children from about seven to thirteen years...Thanks to = extensive revision it features numerous facts and biographies as well as = activity projects which fit neatly into arcticles...each volume has its = own index...The articles are well written, and in fact, the style is = better than that found in many of the pieces in Compton's." 2. First Connections: The Golden Book Encyclopedia (East Lansing, MI: = Hartley Courseware): "Given a child from ages five to ten, who can = function at a computer terminal, this is a possible = purchase...Considering the appealing features of the set, as well as its = low price, it might be purchased for reading and browsing..As a tool to = draw young children into the world of information it is a success..." 3. Eyewitness Children's Encyclopedia (New York: DK Multimedia): "...7 = to 11 age group... text is lively as the numerous, CD-ROM = features...entertainment is stressed more than raw information, but it = is a convenient say of introducing children to the delights of more = sophisticated informaion sources." 4. The Random House Children's Encyclopedia (New York: Random House): = Largest single volume children's encyclopedia, with 400 entries ("broad = in scope") and 3,500 "attractive illustrations" Hope these comments help! :) Kathaleen Bartlett School Librarian Stanton Elementary El Paso, TX k7bart@elp.rr.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=- All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
