There a lot of rules and directions involved in doing a full bib. I'm thinking it might overwhelm the project (spend 2-3 periods in library doing research, spend 2-3 periods in library doing bib). And trying it in a computer lab using OSLIS Citation Maker (http://www.oslis.k12.or.us/elementary/howto/cited/) may introduce some other issues. There are worksheets and other resources there to look at. They should know parts of book, including the info on title page (and probably verso), but my experience has been that there are a lot of 3rd graders that don't abstract enough to pull the requisite bits in the right order to be accurate. Since we're looking for understanding the concepts (citing work, evaluating resources, taking good notes, not plagiarizing), maybe a simplified worksheet for 'Reference materials'. Include Author, Article title, Title, Copyright date, pages used, URL. And they could fill in as they are notetaking. That way it gets introduced as an integral part of the research process, not an add-on. That wouldn't be in alpha order (the works could be numbered to match the number put on notes) so 'redoing' to alpha order could be a short lesson. Then discuss formatting to the extent OK for third grade (I think the double space and hanging indent would mess up a lot of kids). Some reasons not to stress all the minutia on the first go-around: 1.Enough stress with the research piece (notes, resource eval) 2.For many, the writing piece is going to be huge; lots of concepts that aren't fully assimilated 3.We want to get them in the habit of using library, realizing there a variety of resources and getting a grasp of the process. 4. We don't spend a lot of time with spelling HarperCollins, etc 5. It is part of a unit in which they research a particular state and use various resources. It is a difficult concept for them to understand. Looking for ways to make it simpler and easier for them to grasp. Thanks in advance.
