Thanks to everyone for your great ideas! I greatly appreciate it. It
is WONDERFUL to have you all for resources. My original message follows
the ideas.

There might be something useful on one of my site's pages.. see ..

I'd be very interested to see a HIT on this topic ... feel free to
mention this URL if you think worthwhile.

3. I also would love to hear about other first day ideas.
Could you let me know what you find?

Two things I have tried are a No, no, never, never bag
and using the book No, David by David Shannon. With
the first I put in a gift bag all things that would be
associated with how we care for our library books: an
empty soda bottle, candy bar, umbrella, baby, dog,
etc. I paired up the kids and they had to pull
something out at random and finish the sentence No, no
never, never ... in regards to the library and the
object. The rest of the class chants: no, no never
never a thousand times no. This is from Judy
Freeman's books.

The second idea originally came from LMNet last year
and I modified. We read No, David and imagined what
he would do if he were let loose in the library.
Since we have an open house in September we did some
activities associated with the book to display. The
older primary did re-writes, fifth and sixth wrote a
letter to the principal detailing his punishment, and
the lower primary drew pictures adding just a few
words as David Shannon does.

Again, I would love to hear the ideas you receive as I
am not sure what my opening day activity will be.
Good Luck,

6.Ginger,
Last year I used an idea I got from this listserv. All of my classes
loved
it from grade 1 to grade 5. They asked me to play again several weeks
later (but, of course, we didn't). I took a beach ball and the class
stood
in a circle around the library. I threw the ball to a child to start,
and
he/she had to tell a library rule or something they liked about the
library (or whatever). Then he/she threw the ball to another classmate
until everyone had had a turn. It was very simple, but they thought it
was
cool to get to throw a ball in the library, and it was a fun way to
review
library manners.
Please post a hit because I could use some new ideas!

7.Ginger,
I like this idea.

What about

U Use your time wisely

E Earn respect and give it to others

S Solve problems by discussing them and agreeing on
a suitable resolution

Just my ideas. Let me know how it turns out.

---ORIGINAL MESSAGE---

Hello everyone,
Does anyone have ideas on a first day of school game, or intro to the
library. This is my second year at this school, and I would like to
grab their attention. Last year, being new to them all, I used tag
board and a bunch of old pictures of myself that I enlarged on the
scanner and wrote them a "letter" book telling them about me, but also
describing my expectations of them in the library. This year, I can't
do that since I'm not new to them all. I was trying to think of
something that had to do with the word RULES... R=return your books on
time U=?? L=leave the library in the same way you found it E=??? S=???
If you have any good ideas, please let me know. I'd love to get a jump
on this for next year.

Thanks!
