I've also got my elementary library stuff in my "middle school / high
school" library office. The students come into my office and often fail to
look at me when they speak because their eyes are browsing the shelves with
all my toys behind me. Many will stop talking about their initial requests
and ask if they can see something.

I have these because I can't bear to let them go---and I usually find an
excuse to keep them (my 6-year old has been the excuse lately...when he
turns 16, I'm in trouble!) I also have books alongside the toys, posters,
and miniature items that I collect from places like McDonald's, Wendy's,
Burger King, etc.---especially if they're book related.

I also took several of my elementary character toys with me to my university
level position. I left many of them there because I supervised a branch
library that served education majors (future teachers). Many of the
students wanted to use the realia with their projects and most were happy to
find actual toys that could be used as props. We checked them out like
books.

Unless you just want to get rid of them (which I understand also...this
being the summer of my "spring cleaning" at home and school), I'd keep them
for conversation starters....plus, they're great to have around when you're
meeting with a parent with younger students or toddlers. Nothing works
better as a PR tool than a toy character from a favorite book! --- It's
also a great multicultural ice-breaker when you don't speak the language of
a parent with younger children....I've often used my toys to show my
"willingness to help" a parent who visited the library, by offering it to a
toddler or small child who is more than a handful for the busy parent!
