Each year we make them out of construction paper...about 4 inches wide
and 10-12 inches long. We print out 'shipping labels' (2x4 inches) with
the teacher's name at the top (for easier filing) the student's name
(last name first, of course!) and their barcode. We then laminate them.
Each week that the child brings back their book(s) and doesn't have any
overdue books they get one of the little mini stickers (my choice not
theirs) as a 'reward' for appropriate library behavior. At the end of
the year, when they bring their final book back, they get their marker
to take home. The students present their markers when they check out so
they can be scanned and it helps in learning their names as we see
them. Since we sometimes have students helping us, it makes it easier
for them to check books out to the correct student also.

I have done this for 15 years and they have always lasted. There have
been a couple that looked pretty ragged by the end of the year but it
is worth it.

I also have purchased a set of plastic markers, available from Upstart
I think) that we have available for students to use when they drop in
without their class. Need to order a new set this year as the plastic
does fall apart after several (8-10? years.

I have never had any problem with sword play with either of these.
