I use paint sticks too. So far I've had no splinters (3 years). I take
colored markers and put symbols on them so they'[ll know which is theirs.
For example, 8 colors of markers in a heart, sun, square, circle, diamond,
etc. You can get a lot of combinations that way!
My rule about not being in control of your shelf marker: it gets put back
in the can and you have to choose your books from among those on "display",
i.e., standing up rather than on a shelf. If you don't have a marker, you
can't hold your place on the shelf.
