Dear Colleagues,

This year I will not have an aide. I have fixed scheduling 45 minutes
2-5 kids every four days as I have two buildings. I see each child about 42
times in a year this way. This is also the first year I will be using an
automated check out system. New for kids and I alike. I have always had a
lesson during the periods, be it read a story or reference work, fiction
work something which lasted about 25 minutes. My aide during that time would
check in the books and shelve. I have always taught the card catalog but do
not have to do that now.
Without help at all and having two buildings I want to be realistic
about what I can accomplish. I too have a 45 minute plan period and a 30
minute lunch hour like the classroom teachers. What kind of a lesson should
I teach each period? 45 minutes is too long for just check in and check out.
What kinds of things are doable with these kids in-between the time they
come in and they check out. I have a mind set of what I have been doing for
19 years and can't picture other things. I am getting desperate for ideas as
school will be starting shortly.
Please do send me any suggestions of what you do for about a 10-15 minute
gap other than read all the time to them and with them. thank you very much.
