I'm going to retry this=2E The tiny URL worked when I tested it, but =3D
didn't in my post=2E This article is really good=2E

The first post read:

I Am Your Public School: Embracing All Of God's Children=3D20
By Frosty Troy, Editor
The Oklahoma Observer
I am your public school, a 200 year-old experiment giving America the =3D
strongest economy in world history=2E We are 88,000 buildings in more than=
 =3D
15,000 districts=2E And we are as diverse as this great country=2E

This fall I embrace more than 46 million children; for most of them, I =3D=

am their only hope for future success=2E

When the buses roll up, my doors are flung open to children of all =3D
shapes, sizes, levels of ability, some in wheel chairs, geniuses and the =3D=

retarded, average and the developmentally disabled=2E They speak more than=
 =3D
100 languages, including Mong-the Cambodian highland children who came =3D=

here with no written alphabet=2E

I represent "home schooling" at its best for I am the "home school" of =3D=

10 million latchkey children=2E

Some of you would judge me by test scores but I would remind you that a =3D=

test only measures one dimension of a student's development-only in that =3D=

subject on that day depending on whether the student tests well=2E

Although my SAT math and science test scores are at a 33 year high, and =3D=

my ACT scores are up for 11 consecutive years, I remind you that those =3D=

tests don't include foreign language, music, art, drama and other vital =3D=

extracurriculars=2E

If some of the children fail, it isn't for lack of trying by the faculty =3D=

and staff-among the most dedicated and least paid among the industrial =3D=

democracies of the world=2E

My dirty little secret is that many of the 11% of children who drop out =3D=

are the products of sorry parenting-parents who send me children who are =3D=

undisciplined, unwanted, unwashed, unloved; some strung out on drugs and =3D=

alcohol; some abused and neglected; and few who have ever been taken to =3D=

a church, synagogue, or mosque=2E

The miracle is that my doors are open to all of them and many are =3D
reached-not by textbooks alone but by teachers who know there is more to =3D=

a child's life than rote learning=2E

For thousands of kids, the only hug they ever get they get in school=2E

It is painful to be accused of failing African American children=2E That's=
 =3D
a calumny=2E Our greatest hurdle is that half of African American children=
 =3D
are born to single moms, creating a whole new set of problems for the =3D
schools=2E

My plea for more early childhood education goes unheeded, yet there are =3D=

hundreds of millions of dollars for more tests=2E

I grieve when I hear critics say I am "secular" because no specific =3D
beliefs are taught in this pluralistic system=2E But when it comes to =3D
doing God's work-we're on duty every day=2E

Last year more than 30% of the students got their only hot meal in our =3D=

cafeterias=2E Thousands of poor children find decent clothing and =3D
underwear in the school clothing closet filled by faculty, staff, and =3D
PTA moms=2E

Teachers spend nearly $600 of their own money for things like workbooks =3D=

and pencils for needy children=2E

Role modeling, not mantras and Hail Marys, come from a teaching =3D
profession that provides more Sunday school teachers than any other =3D
profession or occupation in America=2E

Aren't feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and nurturing the little =3D=

ones spiritual injunctions in all the great religions of the world?

No school prayer? I wish you could hear the thousands of reverent, =3D
whispered entreaties sent heavenward from students and faculty every =3D
day=2E God's presence is palpable=2E

One of the prayers I overhear most often is, "Please God, give me the =3D
patience to get through just one more day with these kids!"

Some would mock our athletic programs, yet for many of the boys, coaches =3D=

are often their only male role models=2E Teamwork and sportsmanship are =3D=

enduring principles that millions of our graduates have translated into =3D=

successful careers and successful families=2E

Some say I should prepare more students for college, as though college =3D=

is for everyone=2E We are the only education system that educates the =3D
student to the level of his or her ability-doctor, mechanic, engineer, =3D=

nurse, computer manager, or carpenter=2E

America is third in the world in college graduation rates-nearly 25% =3D
with a four-year degree or more=2E

Who says there are no heroes today? Did you see the biographies of those =3D=

rescuers who died in the World Trade Center tragedy? Firemen, policemen, =3D=

union members, emergency workers-90% of them public school graduates=2E

I am passionately committed to the belief that God gives children =3D
different gifts, and we alone address all children whatever their gifts=2E=
 =3D
We play no favorites, taking all of God's children=2E

My most precious possession is more than five million special education =3D=

youngsters-we alone address their needs=2E If your heart ever needs a =3D
lift, visit with a Downs Syndrome child happily employed, thanks to =3D
public education=2E

I suffer the slings and arrows from those who stress my shortcomings in =3D=

order to defund public education=2E Yet my students outscore students in =3D=

the average charter school=2E

Repeated studies show that when students are matched in family =3D
structure, family income and family education attainment, public school =3D=

students do as well or better than parochial school students=2E

Defaming public education in order to promote vouchers for religious =3D
schools is an egregious miscarriage of education's mission=2E I am held =3D=

accountable by my school board-every dollar spent=2E Vouchers require zero=
 =3D
accountability=2E

Yes, my corridors have known random acts of violence, yet the FBI says a =3D=

child is safer in my arms at school than in his or her own home=2E

Thanks to the vision of our forebears=2E America had a 100-year head start=
 =3D
on every other nation in creating universal free public education=2E =3D
Today, with all its flaws, it is the finest system in the industrial =3D
world=2E

I leave no child behind but some of you would dim my lights, leaving in =3D=

the shadows the poor, the halt, the blind, the lame and the special =3D
education student=2E

You would use public school dollars to construct new forms of theocratic =3D=

education, yet the U=2ES=2E General Accounting Office national survey show=
ed =3D
that one-third of my buildings are dangerous and unsafe-yet no help is =3D=

forthcoming=2E

Do as you will, but for me, I will stand proudly in my neighborhood=2E =3D=

America's last egalitarian institution, my arms embracing the finest =3D
educators, administrators, and support personnel in the world-dedicated =3D=

to helping our children realize the American dream=2E
