LM_Netters, As I look to next year, I am thinking about things that I will do differently. I am looking for advice on how you deal with students who visit the library media center on passes. I am in a high school library media center that serves about 1000 students. Three classes can visit my media center at one time. At any time, teachers are allowed to send four students on a pass to the media center. If they want to send more than four, they are supposed to check with us. If we are full, we reserve the right to send students on passes back to class. When we have classes in the media center, it is very difficult to keep track of who is with the class and who is in on a pass. My paraprofessional and I try our best to keep track of the students on passes but sometimes it is impossible. Often a teacher will call and ask if a particular student made it to the media center during a particular hour. Sometimes we can answer the question and sometimes we can't. We ask that any student sent to the media center have a pass. We also ask that the teachers require the students to have their passes signed before they return to class, but some teachers seem not to mind if their passes aren't signed by us. When we are busy working with students, many students leave the library media center to go back to class without their passes signed. At this time, I do not require students to sign in and out. They do have to put their passes in a basket when the enter the library media center. Our school has a closed campus and many students visit the library media center during their lunch. We do not require students who are at lunch to bring us a pass. It is very difficult to keep track of who is who and what everyone is suppose to be doing. I am thrilled that our library media center gets used so much! I just wish I had a way to keep track of who is who and what they are supposed to be doing. For the most part we don't have too many problems, but when a teacher asks if a particular student was here, I'd like to be able to answer his or her question. Does anyone have any great ideas for me? How do you handle students who visit your media center on a pass? Thanks for sharing! I'll post a HIT.
