target: Middle school interdisciplinary unit

Hi,
    A junior high teacher is working on her masters degree and wants to
design a disciplinary unit with the theme of "Growth" for a final project.
She is looking for ideas for teaching reading strategies and literature in
each discipline area.  Her general ideas are:

Language ARts:  A coming of age novel
        Any great ideas?

Social Studies:  westward movement

Science: plants

Math: exponents

Music: tempos and dynamics

Health/PE: health and growth for adolescents.

Any additional or related curriculum ideas would be appreciated.
