Amy, I only use the computer catalog. I no longer have the "card" catalog and in fact, refer to my online version as the "computer catalog". For instruction purposes, I hook up my laptop to a presenter and display the catalog (I introduce this in 3rd grade as per our Media Curriculum). I show the kids how to use it, have several kids come up and try, model interpreting the screen results, and then send them in small groups to go and practice on the computer stations around the Media Center. I did not see any point in maintaining the hard copy, as it was expensive getting the card sets (or making them) and keeping up to date with the filing...new cards in, old cards out. Also, most public libraries no longer use the hard copy, only the online. Just last year I even got bold enough to discard my shelf list cards.
