Thanks to all who posted on Multicultural Collaboration! The ideas are really helpful!! Holly Roge ===================================== I am currently taking on online module from PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) entitled Enhancing Multicultural Education through Technology. Here are some of the resources I read as part of that class: Defining Multicultural Education and the Multicultural Niche http://curry.edschool.Virginia.EDU/go/multicultural/initial.html Detailed and thorough definitions, goals, assumptions, and principles of multicultural education from three people in the field. Steps toward Multicultural Curriculum Transformation http://www.mhhe.com/socscience/education/multi/curriculum/steps.html Describes five phases of curriculum transformation from a multicultural perspective. A Question of Quality http://www.princeton.edu/~progrev/95-96/nov95dh.html A description and argument for multicultural education. Teaching with a Multicultural Perspective http://ericps.ed.uiuc.edu/eece/pubs/digests/1991/gomez91.html Describes appropriate practices necessary to implement an effective multicultural curriculum. The students had to select a piece of literature written by an American author of a specific immigrant group (ie. Hispanic-America, Asian-American). They had to read and outline the book, research the author and identify problems specific to this immigrant group in the book. Then they were required to use online databases to locate, read and print out general articles about this immigrant group in the US. All of the materials were placed in a folder that each student used to write in-class essays, based on their reading and research. This assignment did several things - it required the students to read a multicultural book, research an ethnic author, locate information of the topic in other sources, put the information from different sources into a new essay, and cite specific examples of points made in the essay that occurred in the literature they read. In addition to this being a project that students had to do on their own - no opportunity for plagiarism or mom writing the final product -it also mirrors many of the types of essays they are asked to write on our Regents exams at the HS level, taking info from different sources and creating a new essay. Teachers deleted any books from the list that had been made into movies - so the kids HAD to read. My role in the project was to create the book list, and model the research for the kids. This was a very successful project - for the kids who paid attention! Attached is my book list. They can do a short report and present to the class. A teacher in our school did this and had another class be the audience to the presentation.
