Last year, our entire 11th grade class did a project through their English
classes on immigration. The students had to select a piece of literature
written by an American author of a specific immigrant group (ie.
Hispanic-America, Asian-American). They had to read and outline the
book, research the author and identify problems specific to this immigrant
group in the book. Then they were required to use online databases to
locate, read and print out general articles about this immigrant group in
the US.

All of the materials were placed in a folder that each student used to
write in-class essays, based on their reading and research. This
assignment did several things - it required the students to read a
multicultural book, research an ethnic author, locate information of the
topic in other sources, put the information from different sources into a
new essay, and cite specific examples of points made in the essay that
occurred in the literature they read.

In addition to this being a project that students had to do on their own -
no opportunity for plagiarism or mom writing the final product -it also
mirrors many of the types of essays they are asked to write on our Regents
exams at the HS level, taking info from different sources and creating a
new essay. Teachers deleted any books from the list that had been made
into movies - so the kids HAD to read.

My role in the project was to create the book list, and model the research
for the kids. This was a very successful project - for the kids who paid
attention! Attached is my book list.

half empty" group, and the group looking for someone to blame for spilling
the glass in the first place." - Cleveland Amory

Just a resource you might be interested in - we have a CD-ROM called
"Cultural Horizons of Wisconsin" which has stories from kids around
Wisconsin, and guided journaling for sutdents to encourage them to explore
their own culture as well as others. Also a video series. These are aimed at
about the 4-6th grade level.

Hi there,
You can have the children each explore their own cultures and bring in
items, music, traditional dress, or foods from their own country. They can
do a short report and present to the class. A teacher in our school did
this and had another class be the audience to the presentation.
