I feel that I must comment on the discussion on cataloging. I am a new =
and young school librarian. I just received my library certification in =
February 2003 and my master's this month. I am a very young librarian =
since I just received my B.S. in Social Studies Education in May 2001 =
and am only 23 years old. =20

I attended Wright State University in Ohio, which is accredited by NCATE =
and ALA for School Library Media. Our cataloging professor was =
excellent. We did not use a cataloging textbook, but used the MARC =
manual from the Library of Congress, Abridged Dewey 13, and the 17th =
version of Sears. As we were learning to catalog, we used the MARC =
Magician program and did mostly hands on experiences. The professor =
would bring many types of material and we would catalog individually, in =
small groups, and in the large groups. We certainly did our work "down =
in the trenches." =20

As I started my library job this past August, my library was in the =
process of being automated. We still had the card catalog and used =
cards for circulation. I had to relearn how to use a real card catalog =
because we certainly were not taught that in my library program. It was =
a focus on MARC records and how to use those with automation. I also =
personally had not used a card catalog since I graduated from elementary =
school, so it was a learning process for me. As we automated and I had =
to do a lot of cataloging, I realized how vitally important cataloging =
is and how much I learned personally in my class of cataloging. I am =
certainly glad that I had practical experience in doing it!=20
