I have a subscription with Ancestry.com ($120) because I only need the US
information and the census records; however, most of the census information
can also be found on other websites (and, of course, you must wait for the
newly digitalized records to be uploaded via Ancestry.com; but it's worth
the wait.)

I've had my subscription for two years (with my mother doing most of the
online searching...), and it's worth the money. We have found tons of
information that would have taken too much time and effort for both my
mother and myself if we were doing it manually--(she is searching for her
great-grandmother's roll number--full-blood Cherokee, Trail of Tears, etc.)
but we must also do the research from the Georgia area (where my grandfather
was born and raised), as well as the Texas area (where many came to
live...and later die...in unmarked graves...so fun!!), so the travel to
these various court houses and libraries would be impossible for her--and
me!

We have located lots of information (including some of the roll numbers for
my father's side--he didn't even know he had a Native American background).
It's just good to have some documentation that is not "just from the
Internet" but that is located in documents that can be traced back to
government records.

If you need the UK and the historical newspapers, you might want to purchase
that product, but usually they have specials once you join, so you might
find a "freebie" search for a specific time period that will help you decide
if you want to increase your coverage if you choose only the US records and
census to begin your online searching.

Good luck and have fun!
