This may be off the 5th grade topic a bit but for what it is =
worth...with my K,1,2 kids we teach them that when they come to the =
library they may loan 3 different types of books....

Must take at least 1 "I can read" book for independent reading (easy =
enough to master alone)

May take 1 "We can read" book that can be buddy shared and may be a bit =
challenging

May take a "Look and Learn" book that is either non-fiction or =
challenging enough that a parent or teacher may need to support them =
heavily. A video can count for a look and learn book.

We stress this at the beginning of the year and it works pretty well. I =
got this idea from a LMS I knew...can not remember to give credit =
however!

If a little one comes up with three overly challenging books we will =
kindly ask...which is your I can read book?? They get the message and =
reselect.
