You can also compress the files and save them to your
local harddrive in that format. Just make sure that you
keep a copy of your archiving/unarchiving program on
your local harddrive so you can unarchive them if/when
you need them.

(You can also do the same thing, in reverse, with
important files on your local harddrive - archive them
and copy the archives to a backup directory on the
server.)
