I received so many good ideas for the ELMO. Thank you
to everyone who responded. A lot of people wanted a
hit, so here it is.

Erica Payne, Media Specialist
Polk Elementary School
Dearborn Heights, MI

*********

Teachers used it to show the kids a bat close up.

Put books on so the children could see illustrations,
etc.,

We used it for a vision-impaired student.

Replace an overhead projector when presenting
documents. No more trying to get a good transparency
to print on the copying machine, No more using just
black and white documents because your copier can't
print in color. Just lay the original document on the
ELMO and present.

A back-up to powerpoint presentations. As we all
know, computers are not infallible so I print off the
pages of my powerpoint and have them on hand just in
case. Doing that has saved many a presentation.
Because, in truth, most people's powerpoints are
little more than glorified overhead transparencies.

Showing pages from books, maps, original documents -
the uses and possibilities are endless.

I use one to teach my college class in Children's
Literature. It is great to use to show the
illustrations in a picture book.

You don't need transparencies! You can use typed text
(I enlarge mine to 18 point type, but I have a
classroom of 290students), show graphs and charts in
articles without having to scan them and put them into
a computer program, etc.

Great way to teach money - Anything 3D.

Show graphic organizers that I am working on with the
kids.

Great for showing anything from a book.

I use it all the time in place of the overhead. It's
great to show where to find the copyright date in a
book, teach how to read an index, how to locate an
author's name for an encyclopedia article, or just
share illustrations. I LOVE the zoom feature! It has
made a huge difference in my teaching. And best of
all, NO colored marker all over me when the lesson is
over!

We have an ELMO too...in a fixed position so find it
impossible to use for text presentations. However, it
works great to show pictures, zero in on a specific
part of an art print or art object, demonstrate
dissections, etc.

I have one in our ITV room. I can use it as it was
intended, showing any sort of object to the remote
site, or I can turn the head to use it as another
camera. Right now we are only receiving a class, and
the instructor is not too familiar with the equipment.
About the second day she had her sound muted, so that
we couldn't hear her. I was unable to explain to her
what to do, so I switched to the document camera, put
the remote on the stage, and showed her where the mute
button was. We promptly were able to hear her thanking
me for the help. Once in a while I teach a class in
that room, and I have found it helpful to have some
sort of instruction on the stage so that the students
see it on the tv as they enter. It seems to get their
attention.

Science dept. might use it for showing objects,

English dept. for creative writing (showing a picture
to the entire class).

Spanish teachers got really excited and have since
used it for showing photos of their travels to
students.

Art teachers utilize it, not only for showing pictures
from books, but also for students who are doing art
reports, as a way to show their artists' work to the
entire class.
