I'm getting really depressed about hearing of all the librarians and programs being cut due to the budget crisis and what I feel are penny-wise pound-foolish reactions by people in administrative positions (including school boards). And here is why I say this: we have the studies (Colorado, Pennsylvania, Alaska, Massachusetts) which directly correlate higher student achievement with the presence of fully stocked and staffed school libraries. If we know this and have the proof of it, yet schools and districts refuse to put those programs and staff in place, then isn't there a case for filing some kind of "educational malpractice" suit against the state of California, the district, the school? I'm ready to play hardball. *********************************************************************** Kathy Graves, IMC Director/Librarian Siskiyou County Office of Education 609 South Gold Street, Yreka, CA 96097 e-mail: kgraves@sisnet.ssku.k12.ca.us FAX: 530-842-8436 hmpg: http://www.sisnet.ssku.k12.ca.us/~imcftp AV: 530-842-8428 Phone: 530-842-8427 Library: 530-842-8430 *********************************************************************** =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=- All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
