Unfortunately, we librarians have not been all that successful at convincing people that library services are essential to education. We here in British Columbia, for example, had a University President who stated publicly that education should be appropriate to the work being done. A waitress, he said, required only a 3rd grade education. The implication, of course, being that further education would be a waste. If politicians are not convinced that libraries are essential BEFORE they get in office, cuts are inevitable. I suspect, too, that the appearance of being "free" actually hampers our cause. That which costs plenty is appreciated more.
