Some of you may not have read the article because of the title,
expecting yet another rant about how the Internet is replacing libraries
and librarians. You might want to actually read it as there is a great
little nugget inside. In referring to data that is not readily
searchable by Google the author states:

"...this information is often the cream of the crop: magazines, books,
peer-reviewed journals. To get to it, you need to research the database
content yourself and then pay a hefty fee or, ironically, you need to go
to a modern library (they're not so quaint and irrelevant, after all)
that has access and, ideally, a reference librarian to help you get
started..."

I just had a similar experience with a sophomore Honors II English
classs. A few days ago the teacher told me his students could not find
"anything" dealing with in-depth biographical info on Elie Wiesel and
criticisms dealing with his work "Night." I sighed, did a few print
screens from Student Resource Center, Literature Resource Center,
Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center and the Biography Resource Center.
Took me all of 5 minutes.

He scheduled his students in for library time today!

After 5 years of Googling, I am actually seeing a trend towards using
reliable, dependable, authoritative resources, especially among students
who have grown up with the Internet and understand its shallowness.

Keep on plugging, ladies and gentlemen, we are a valuable commodity!
