For several years we put stickers on the front of books with the date due on it, but in the middle of last year we decided to stop it because the labels become 'ugly' and covered up more of the book (we already had the barcode on the front) and the stamping took extra time. This year we have continued NOT date stamping and I don't see any difference in the amount of late books. We are a k-4 elementary school on a fixed schedule, so even though kids may come in at other times, I tell them that they need to bring their books back each week during their regular class time, whether they are finished with them or not. If they are not finished with them, then they can renew them which will keep them current. We also don't allow renewals without book in hand. In a high school I imagine that this can be quite a challenge...what I have heard from some high school folks is to make all books due at the end of the week, or month, or the 15th of each month...so if you check out 'early enough' you get your books for a longer period of time.
