Jeri,
Were priorities being put into place or was Steven Harper throwing the
gauntlet down to both the Superintendent and the alumni sports boosters.
Let's be truthful with ourselves. Football, basketball and sometimes
baseball (usually in the south and west) will be the sports of concern
usually because they draw crowds and bring in revenue. Many people know
which schools were state champions in football or basketball, but I can
guarantee that few people know or much less care if a library or librarian
has been named best in the state. This attitude is not limited to
libraries.
When you think that any transplant surgeon, teacher or even the President of
the United States make far less than many pro athletes, film stars or TV
personalities, it is not difficult to understand that we have fallen down
the rabbit hole and the mad hatter is in charge of library/school funding.
Ray Romano is getting $50,000,000 for 26 episode of Everybody Loves Raymond
next season, what is your library budget?
Remember that should and will are not synonyms, especially when it comes to
funding and life is not fair, learn it early and save yourself much
disappointment.
