My colleagues (teachers and librarians) and I work in a HS that serves 1500
students, grades 9-12. We would like our students to have separate userids and
passwords. Our district technology department doesn't want to do it. Now our
school is going through Middlestates Evaluation and the idea of having separate
userids/passwords has been brought up again. I'd like to make a case for
having separate accounts. The pros I've come up with so far are as follows:

- Mischievous actions can be traced to student user.
- Students would not be allowed a password (i.e. cannot use the computer) until
they and their parents have signed a technology agreement form. [Currently, we
have no way of knowing what students have and have not signed the form.]
- Students could have their own space on the hard-drive, which would eliminate
some of the need for disks.

For those of you who work in schools where all students have their own
userid/password, can you tell me how it is working out for you. How has it
made things easier/better? What problems are there? ALSO, what does it
entail, in terms of man hours, etc.?

For those of you whose students don't have individual userids/passwords, what
prevents you from getting them? What problems do you foresee?

Thanks,
