This activity gives students the opportunity to think creatively and work in small groups. It helps build students' knowledge of adjectives or descriptive words and their use in creative writing. Approximate Grade Level: 5+ http://ofcn.org/cyber.serv/academy/ace/lang/ceclang/ceclang086.html Basic Grammar Review Using "Jabberwocky" The purpose of this activity, used at the beginning of the year, is to help students identify where they are weak in their grammar skills (in a fun fashion). From there, the teacher can choose to emphasize the various areas of grammar that need to be strengthened. Approximate Grade Level: 7+ http://ofcn.org/cyber.serv/academy/ace/lang/ceclang/ceclang004.html Sentence Mix 'n Match This activity explains how you can get your students to mix and match subjects and predicates to create wacky sentences. Approximate Grade Level: 5+ http://www.score.kaplan.com/activities/activity53.html Untangling a Not of Hare Homophones often pose problems for kids (and some adults) who are learning to spell. This activity turns the challenge into a fun word game in which students invent funny homophone pairs. Approximate Grade Level: 5+ http://www.score.kaplan.com/activities/activity47.html Vindicating Verbs This activity offers a way for kids to recognize and practice irregular verb forms, with a slightly competitive twist. Approximate Grade Level: 5+ http://www.m-w.com/home.htm The Semantic Rhyming Dictionary This online rhyming dictionary lets you enter any word and look for precise or close matches. For example, you can look for words that just rhyme on the last syllable. You can also use the search feature to look for definitions in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, find words that have similar meanings, or even spell-check the word. Approximate Grade Level: 5+ http://www.link.cs.cmu.edu/dougb/rhyme-doc.html Cobuild Idiom of the Day Every day this site displays a random entry from the Cobuild Dictionary of Idioms. Approximate Grade Level: 3+ http://www.eduplace.com/tales/ Big Dog Grammar http://gabiscott.com/bigdog/index.htm Here is a site that lists lots of links. Some things are a little advanced for the kids, but many of the examples look useable. Web English Teacher http://www.webenglishteacher.com/ This has one link on the right hand side for supporting students with disabilities for a research paper, and on the left side, there's a grammar link with a list of links on grammar.
