Theresa, I just ran into the same thing today doing inventory. Several older books had the same sort of oddity based on the title rather than the author. In fact there was no usual 3-letter code for the author. There was a Dewey classification and then a Cutter from the title (not including beginning article such as "the"). I changed them.
