 Lisa

I have a few simple suggestions that have helped my circulation.

First, I have a 3 ring binder on the circ. Desk that is the "Please Get"
list. Students and staff write the name of any media they'd like us to add
to our collection, and if there is money and it is appropriate I get those
things first. If the person who requested it has signed the request they
get it first.

Second,(and this is not original to me) We have a "Caught you Being Good"
which is the opposite of a detention slip. The "Good Slip" can be given ou=
t
for anything we see from courtesy to helping out at the circ. Desk.
Students take them home, have them signed by a parent, bring them back and
put them in a box for a $10 certificate to a local store or restaurant.

Thirdly, We have a school store in which students spend points that they
have earned from reading AR books (Please no discussion on this program -
thanks)

Lastly, we have monthly contests. Here is a run down for this year =AD most
are ideas from other sources.
Oct. Which Witch - Match the descriptions (Love winter and Turkish Delight
is your favorite candy) to the witch from a book (Witch from "Lion Witch an=
d
the Wardrobe") The prize was a Big pumpkin from my assistants garden.
Nov. Feast of Books Designed to get students to look at media choices they
would normally never notice...The student who found the most pieces of medi=
a
with the Book Title, Author and location in our MC won a Thanksgiving pie.
Students had to write out the books, not print off from the cat.
Dec. Coloring Contest My assistant got a student to make a hundred or so
copies of Holiday coloring pictures from sites on the internet. We just
drew one from each grade level. Winners got a giant peppermint stick and a
new paperback book. (We got books specifically for prizes when we had the
book fair in Oct.)
Jan. A 2003 Challenge Part 1 Use a ruler, tape measure, map or atlas to
answer the following challenges. Part 2 Keep track of everything necessary
to correctly answer this challenge. Part 1 Start at the door of your
classroom, or the front door of the school building. Measure how far you
have traveled. (1) 2003 inches, (2) 2003 steps, (3) 2003 blocks, etc. Part
2 How much can you eat in 2003 bites? With this the students kept a list of
what they ate. Prize: Popcorn and movie in our conference room for the
winners
Feb. Mystery Pres. Trivia questions about US pres. i.e. Only one presiden=
t
was never married, who was he?
Mar. Celebrate Seuss Series of clues from Seuss books =AD Prize a 1 pound
Hershey Bar
Apr. It=B9s for the Birds State birds, bird books, largest, smallest,
farthest traveling, longest flying, longest living, ....
May. How many Books are in our Media Center? Popcorn and movie in the
reading pit for the winners.

Good Luck
