Thanks for the ideas on the Parent Collection. Several people asked me to
post a hit, so here are the results! Thanks, again!!!!

I think the video "Reviving Ophelia" is excellent for parents to view with
their teenagers. It is Mary Pipher's advice to teens and parents about the
mixed messages teens get about their "image" that leads to many teen
problems such as eating disorders, etc.

I highly recommend Boxcars and One-Eyed Jacks books and materials. They are
a "must have" for your collection. They provide wonderful math games for
all levels, and work for gifted and special needs students as well as the
average kid. You can use old incomplete card sets and/or basic dice for
several of the books or you can order cool cards and dice from the company.
Kids LOVE these games and they are fun to play as a family. When I first
started using them my husband and I volunteered in our children's grade 2
and 5 classes and did an hour of math games once a week with the kids. It
was thrilling to have kids say "Alright! Math!" when we arrived in the grade
5 class. Both teachers invited us back the following year, my children's
new teachers invited us and several other staff members also wanted us in
their classroom. Every elementary library in our district has these books
and many teachers and families own their own copies. This is a Canadian
company but the material is well worth the hassle and I would not be
surprised if they have an American distributor.

Our library has book and video copies of "Parenting with Love and
Logic". These are well received. I would also recommend the books by
Ilg and Ames of the Gesell Institute on different age groups. "Your 5
Year Old", "Your Six Year Old", etc.

For activities, what about the books you get with a Scholastic Book
Fair on subjects like "Poetry Projects with Pizzazz"? They always have
math puzzlers and creative writing idea books too. Or books on making
creative cards. I'm thinking in terms of creative expressions in the
different core subject areas so parents can get their children
practicing these disciplines at home in new ways that will keep them
interested.

"Mother's Almanac" and "Father's Almanac" have been around for at least
25 years. If they are still available, they are excellent.
The Read Aloud books are great resources. I forget the author's name. I
have it at home. He talks about the importance of read aloud, what
makes a good read aloud book, and lists titles for different age
groups.

If you use Accelerated Reader, you might want to include copies of your AR
quizzes. Also copies of your school yearbooks would be good to have.
