I agree with Toni. I even had beginning of the year 3rd graders just =
write down the title and author of the books they were using. With first =
grade I've used a paper with partial sentences on it so that the kids =
had to fill in the blanks. I like the idea of bubbles, but I'm wondering =
if how hard it will be for the little ones to then make those into =
complete sentences? For those who are advanced readers this will =
probably not be a problem, but for the non-readers it will most =
definitely be a challenge! I had 6th graders work with the 1st graders =
last year. It worked really well.

Subject: Re: Elem: Planning Inquiry Project for First Grade

For a first grade research project, Dot asked:

>In the past I have used the the Big6 Model for research and the Trash =
'N
>Treasure Method for notetaking. I would like to know what most of you =
are
>using
>at this level.
>What kinds of graphic organizers are you using? How much bibliographic

Here are my thoughts:

Barbara Jansen's School Library Media Activities Monthly article is a =
good
start for Trash N' Treasures notetaking. It can be found at
http://www.lubbock.k12.tx.us/InformationFluency/Trash&Treasure/reading_fo=
r_information.htm

A graphic organizer for note taking proves more helpful for the little =
ones
than note cards. In a project about animals, for instance, the =
organizer
might simply have "bubbles" for the five key questions being asked with
limited space for responses (thus reinforcing your TNT note taking =
method).

At first grade, I think that author and title are adequate bibliographic
information (or just title in the case of multivolume unauthored =
reference
books). I'm curious to hear other opinions on this one.

Best,
Toni
