I would suggest making sure that part of the time they are moving around. As a daycare provider, I have had some kindergarteners who could have sat through an hour of reading, but many have too much energy to burn off, especially at the beginning of the year. How about a book that they can move to, like Eric Carle's From Head to Toe. And their own little carpet square to sit on should help, too.
