Way back when I was at an elementary school, I loved the K's. They were so
open and friendly.
I started off each class, until they got the hang of it, with an
"instruction" : If we need something we raise our hand and wait until our
name is said...When I Hold up one finger and point to the sky, I want all to
be quiet ( and I wouldn't say anything until all were quiet - they really
police themselves).

At the beginning of the year I used activities instead of a story - If you
are not familiar with it "The Bear Hunt" is a great activity. And there are
others that you can use. They are a bit more active and still stress
following directions. Then you can read a VERY short story. Or better yet, a
short flannel story - Have some of them hold the flannel pieces for you and
when it is time to use them, point to that student to give it to you. Be
sure that you choose different students each week so all will have a turn.

If you are in the middle of the story, stop and explain that this is the
time when they can be just like the "Big kids" in school. They must be quiet
so others can hear the story and if they need to go to the bathroom or see
the nurse, they should wait until you are through. If they need to go, they
should raise their hands and be patient.

Last year when my grandson was in K, he got so used to raising his hand when
he needed something, that he did it even when we were out at dinner. It was
so cute.

Hi,
This is my first year as a librarian teaching grades K-8. All classes went
well except K. I do not have an assistant and after about 10 minutes, I
could not keep the kids interested, even while reading a story. They wanted
to go to the nurse, the bathroom, etc. Please send me some suggestions.
Our class time is 30 minutes.
Thanks so much,
Joyce Miller
