[A similar message was sent to a few other lists. Please excuse any
duplication.]

Greetings,

A teacher came to me last week and made me aware of mis-information in
one of our state's Young Adult Book Award titles, Pedro and Me by Judd
Winnick. I did some investigating and even emailed the author who
assured me that the publisher was aware of the problem and had fixed it
for subsequent printings, however the copy I purchased two years ago and
the copy I purchased last spring when it was on the SCASL YABA list both
contain the same error.

On page 98, in the top frame, if your book says "microwavable saran
wrap" instead of "non-microwavable saran wrap" you will need to decide
if you are going to fix the book or discard it. Microwavable saran wrap
is not an acceptable barrier because it is porous and will not protect
against the spread of AIDS or other STDs.

Because this book is on our South Carolina Book Award List, it will
probably find a much wider audience than it might have otherwise, and
I'm sure none of us want to be responsible for mis-information being
placed in the hands of our students.

Finally, does anyone have any suggestions of the best way to handle
this? Would you change it or discard it? How do you ensure that your
students have the correct information on a delicate topic without
embarrassing them? How do you make sure, if you decide to change the
information in the book, that the reader understands it was a legitimate
change of information rather than someone defacing the book?

Any input on this topic would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Kim
