OFF TOPIC: Digital Camera for Personal Use

We are expecting our 2nd baby in May, and we need to purchase a high
quality digital camera before he arrives.  I'm looking for
suggestions/recommendations.  It will eventually replace our 35mm, so we
want something with a zoom, etc.  We just don't really have a clue as to
where to start.  We have a digital video camera (Sony) that takes still
photos, but they are very grainy.  Also, would anyone recommend
purchasing online?  If so, where?
