This whole discussion has brought back a fond memory: My dad taught in the NYC school system for 50 years, when ties were required for all male teachers, no matter what the weather conditions. Dad always wore clip-on bowties; the uglier, the better. On this particular day it was 105* in his science classroom, so he unbuttoned the top button of his short-sleeved shirt, and let the tie dangle from one side of the collar. An idiot administrator decided to write him up for 'violating the dress code.' Dad contested this rebuke, and the complaint went all the way up the chain of command. When it finally reached the administrative law judge, he looked at the evidence (the tie), listened to both sides, and then decided that Dad had not broken any rules since technically, he WAS wearing a tie. Then he asked Dad *where* he had gotten such an unbelievably ugly tie, because he thought the tie-maker should be charged for malicious conduct!
