Since many of us will be heading back to school at the end of the month I
thought others would be interested in some options for checkout.

I keep a three ring binder on the circulation desk which contains all the
barcodes for the students and staff. It's organized by grades and classes.
I have each division in alphabetical order and the pages in plastic sheet
protectors. The Alexandria system has a report titled "Patron Desk
Reference" that is easy to run for each class. I use the basic format that
lists the students on the left side and their barcode number on the right.
The number has the format so that we can just scan the number on the page.
It's fast and easy to use when you have a whole class in for a book
exchange. I'm guessing that most automation system have a similar report
you can use.

The other thing I've done is to give the older students (grades 5 & 6)
their card from the rolex that I created when they first arrived at our
school. I use to get copies of all the student photos and attach them to a
card with their patron number. It was time consuming to update the photos
each year, but the students really liked the cards. I liked having the
photos to help me remember some of the students that I'm always mixing up.
The problem with giving the students the cards is that 70% never remembered
them so we used the Desk Reference report anyway.

Happy scanning.
