Hi all, I had some wonderful suggestions for books I can use to promote the=20 first season of football in the history of our school this fall. Some=20= people asked for a hit, and I am sure everyone could promote this books=20= this fall. Thanks everyone for your wonderful suggestions! Books that were suggested (in no particular order): Backfield package by Thomas Dygard Second stringer by same author Books by Thomas Dygard.=A0 Also, his short story "Just Once" in the=20 Ultimate Sports story collection book. Damage by A.M. Jenkins Freshman flash by Mike Boushell (lightweight paperback series entry) Roughnecks by Thomas Cochran Running loose-chris crutcher Anything to win by gloria miklowitz (I'm not sure if it's specifically=20= football but has to to with high school athletics-may want to check for=20= sure) Friday Night Lights: A Town, a team and a Dream by H.G. Bissinger(For=20= those following the movie discussion - it appears this will be a movie=20= in Oct. 2004) Hometown Legend by Jerry B. Jenkins.=A0 =A0 (Again for the movie display = -=20 It's also a movie on DVD.)=A0 Football for Dummies by Howie Long Bloody Sundays: Inside the Dazzling, Rough-and-Tumble World of the NFL=20= byMike Freeman Essential Vince Lombardi: Words and Wisdom to Motivate, Inspire, and=20 Win byVince Lombardi Friday Night Heroes: A Look at Texas High School Football by Carlton=20 Stowers I am Third: the Inspiration for Brian's Song by Gale Sayers It's Not Over 'Til It's Over by Al Silverman The biography of Walter Payton-- Never Die Easy A Civil War, about the history of the football rivalty between Army=20 and Navy, by John Feinstein Coach Clair Bee has written several sports novels including the Chip=20 Hilton series about football. Two of the titles are, A Pass and a=20 Prayer and Touchdown Pass. They are popular among 7th-10th grades. Rites of Autumn, Remember the Titans and Rudy. (This one is OP but you=20= can get used copies on Amazon or the video) I'm not sure I would include Running Loose by Richard Peck. Even=20 though it's popular and powerful, it paints a scary portrait of corrupt=20= coaches and violence among players. Same with another title called,=20 Damage, and any of the football fiction by Tim Green. Books by Thomas Dygard.=A0 Also, his short story "Just Once" in the=20 Ultimate Sports story collection book. Some other thoughts/ideas: *I can't help you with titles but you might like to build on an idea I=20= did with my students this winter where we have four codes of football (rugby union, rugby league, soccer and Australian Rules) all very popular. I bought four cheap green plastic tablecloths and carefully marked the various playing fields in for each code. I got students interested in=20= each code to make me miniature scale goalposts. I also made league ladders=20= for each code's national competition. They worked together to write up team and player profiles, make paper=20 models of team uniforms, collect newspaper articles and keep the league=20 ladders up to date. We even set up a tipping contest and I taught them about odds=20= by having a betting contest on the eventual premiers for each code. (No=20 money involved and we watch a particular national betting service to see how=20= the odds change with each week's results and recalculate) Maths and=20 reading and research everywhere! For a fortnight for each, I covered a table with a code's cloth and on=20= it displayed fiction and non-fiction for that code. (There is a huge push=20= here for boys' reading so books about boys and sport are everywhere). =20 Although my target audience was the boys, we had just as many girls involved=20 over the time and there was an increase in the respect and friendships between=20 them at a time-of-life when they are normally at each other's throats! This was so successful and even though this was not a formal teaching=20 theme, we nevertheless had some interesting discussions about controversial=20 issues such as violence in sport (the judiciary is very tough and even=20 high-profile players cop lengthy suspensions) and drugs in sport - all grist to their lifelong learning mill. I had characters in here at lunchtimes who have NEVER ventured in on their own accord before and I feel very pleased=20 with the results which essentially cost me $US5.00 for some plastic=20 tablecloths and maybe an hour! **You might also want to run a check through some of the online vendors' catalogs to find specific titles that might appeal to your coach / high school boys. Companies like Follett (Titlewave), Mackin, or even=20 Southwest Book Company have great online catalogs that will allow you to choose=20 books based upon different critieria (reading levels, subjects, interests,=20 etc.) Hope you all enjoy these! I am going out to buy my green tablecloth=20 tomorrow! :-) Sheri Haveman Library Media Specialist Pella Christian High School 604 Jefferson Pella, IA 50219 641-628-4440 havemans@pella-christian.pvt.k12.ia.us= -------------------------------------------------------------------- All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
