I should probably have mentioned that my inforamtion about computer parts
and quality control and pricing came from two sources, both former
students. One works for Intel (chip maker), the other for Compaq/HP
(originally assembly of computers, now repair/service). I can't speak for
AMD (makers of Athlon chips), but the practice seems to be relatively
widespread in the computer industry. I know from personal experience in my
old district that Gateway's quality has declined dramatically. At least
half of the computers delivered last year failed in the first six
months. Last year, the rate was about 35%. The original shipments 4
years ago had a very low failure rate, on the order of 10% in the first
year, in hard daily use.
