Actually, since you're on LM_NET, the answer is SMART. Many public
libraries have a similar situation, where the director may be the only
degreed librarian. The folks who work reference or circulation are also
commonly called librarians by the public. It's a perception that is not
going to change. I would take the title for the public, especially
students if they use it, use a different one officially, and keep up with
things here, on the list.
