Esteemed colleagues, Yesterday my principal and I were discussing the difficulty I am experiencing in getting teachers to work collaboratively with me (ideally using the model of the librarian as process/resource person and the teacher as content person) because a) they are so strapped for time anyway, and b) we have no planning time together. She said, "Do you think it would be better to take you out of the rotation (providing release time)?" She doesn't know if it's actually possible but we can talk more about it. Wow! I feel like I've been handed a golden opportunity and I don't want to mess it up! My big question: how do I manage a switch from fixed to flex time at the elementary school? Is there a book that describes the steps to take in this shift? I know it's so much more than just cutting me out fof the rotation -- I need teachers to get on board philosophically, too. Here are some issues that come to mind immediately: 1. I know teachers could easly get resentful if I am no longer providing them release time, but they are then expected to plan MORE time to be *with* me in the library. How do I approach them, teach them, guide them, etc. about how much more beneficial it is for us to work together? (One thing I thought of was to go into the classroom more... also to do more "tech" stuff, which I am good at, and that will lure them out of the classroom & into the media center/computer lab... I could do a presentation to the whole staff about it... etc, etc.). 2. On a flex schedule, how do you handle book check-out time with little ones (say, K-2)? Would it be better to continue a fixed schedule for these kids once a week? If so, how long? What about the 3-5 kids? Do you have special "book pick-out" times when you are always available to help kids with this? My mind is racing. Thank you in advance for helping with this big question! I will post a HIT. --- Maggi Rohde - rohdem@aaps.k12.mi.us Library/Media Specialist Allen Elementary School (734) 971-5901 -------------------------------------------------------------------- All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
